This Sonic the Hedgehog 3 LCD game was released in 1994 by Tiger Electronics.
I find it hard to believe that these LCD games were still being released in 1994 (according to IGN, Tiger was releasing LCD games well into the late 90s). I can only imagine the disappointment receiving this as a gift when the Game Boy, Game Gear and Atari Lynx have already been on the market for 4 or 5 years. Even in the 80s I remember these weren’t very good.
I’m not going to pretend I can play it, either. I’ve never been very good at these LCD games, I just can’t tell what’s going on. What I can do, though, is open it up and see what’s inside.
Most of the space inside is taken up by the button PCB. The conductive pads for the D-pad and action buttons are all individual and fit into the back of the buttons.
I’m not a fan of these LCD games but they do have a charm about them. Even so, I am still debating whether or not to gut this and make it the new case for a Raspberry Pi project.
